Core Functions of DOP Plasticizer in PVC Artificial Leather Production

DOP (Dioctyl Phthalate) is the most classic and widely used primary plasticizer for PVC artificial leather. It plays an irreplaceable role in adjusting leather hand feel, physical performance and production efficiency, and has long been the mainstream additive for ordinary sofa leather, luggage leather and indoor decorative leather in most factorys.

Enhance Flexibility and Elasticity The most intuitive function of DOP is to boost the flexibility and elasticity of PVC leather. Pure PVC resin presents hard and brittle properties at room temperature. After adding DOP, its molecules insert between PVC polymer chains to weaken intermolecular force. This transformation turns rigid PVC material into soft, foldable and bendable artificial leather, fundamentally preventing brittle cracking and deformation during folding and daily use.
Optimize Production and Processing Performance DOP greatly optimizes the processing performance of PVC leather during mass production. It can reduce PVC melting temperature and melt viscosity, making calendering, scraping and other mainstream leather forming processes smoother. The optimized material fluidity ensures uniform forming, improves leather surface flatness and texture consistency, and effectively raises factory production efficiency.
Improve Low-Temperature Resistance DOP significantly enhances the cold resistance of finished PVC leather. It lowers the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PVC materials, allowing artificial leather to maintain stable softness and toughness in cold environments. It effectively avoids common problems like leather hardening, stiffness and low-temperature cracking, greatly expanding the application range of PVC leather products.
Improve Formula Compatibility and Stability DOP features excellent compatibility with PVC resin. It can fully fuse with PVC molecules and promote the uniform dispersion of other formula additives, including heat stabilizers, pigments and fillers. This ensures stable and consistent quality of each leather batch, with uniform color and no local performance differences.
Limitations and Usage Restrictions DOP has minor practical limitations for high-standard scenarios. Long-term use may cause slight migration and surface precipitation (oozing oil), which gradually affects leather hand feel and durability. As a phthalate plasticizer, DOP is restricted in the EU, Japan and other regions, especially for PVC leather used in children’s products, food contact and medical-grade scenarios.
Eco-friendly alternatives such as DOTP and ATBC are gradually adopted for high-environmental-requirement products. Nevertheless, DOP still boasts outstanding cost performance and stable processing performance. It remains the most reliable and cost-effective choice for ordinary indoor PVC leather, including sofa leather, luggage leather and non-direct skin-contact leather products.
