Product description

Product Description
For manufacturers working with PVC artificial leather, choosing the right plasticizer is everything. DOP is one of the most widely used additives, and for good reason. It blends seamlessly with PVC resin, helping to turn rigid plastic into a flexible, workable material that’s perfect for upholstery, fashion, and automotive use. Unlike some alternatives, it’s easy to process and doesn’t require complicated adjustments to your existing formulas.

| What makes DOP stand out for leather production is its ability to enhance both softness and durability. When mixed into the PVC compound, it reduces brittleness, improves stretchability, and ensures the final leather stays pliable even with regular use. For sofas and chairs that see daily use, this means fewer cracks, less peeling, and a longer product lifespan. Many factories rely on DOP to keep their production lines running smooth and consistent, batch after batch. | IHeat resistance is another big win. During high-temperature processing like calendering or laminating, DOP stays stable and doesn’t volatilize easily. That means less downtime, less material waste, and a more uniform finish on every roll of leather. For large-scale operations, that kind of reliability translates directly to cost savings and fewer headaches down the line. | It’s not just about function, either. The right amount of DOP helps create that soft, natural drape that customers love. Whether you’re making matte nappa-style leather for high-end sofas or textured grain leather for budget-friendly seating, DOP helps you hit the exact hand-feel and flexibility your market demands. It works with most standard PVC leather formulations, so you don’t have to overhaul your recipes to get better results. |
General Formula for PVC Artificial Leather (Calendering Process)
| No. | Raw Material Name | Dosage (phr) | Function Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | PVC Resin Powder (SG-3/SG-5) | 100 | Main base material, determine basic physical strength |
| 2 | Dioctyl Phthalate DOP | 50 ~ 70 | Primary plasticizer, control softness and hand feel |
| 3 | Auxiliary Plasticizer (DOA / Epoxidized Soybean Oil) | 5 ~ 15 | Improve cold resistance and anti-migration performance, assist plasticizing |
| 4 | Calcium Zinc Stabilizer / Composite Stabilizer | 3 ~ 5 | Prevent thermal decomposition during high temperature processing, enhance thermal stability |
| 5 | Lubricant (Stearic Acid / PE Wax) | 0.5 ~ 1.5 | Optimize fluidity, prevent roller sticking, reduce processing friction |
| 6 | Filler (Precipitated Calcium Carbonate / Talc Powder) | 10 ~ 40 | Cut production cost, improve dimensional stability, adjust dosage according to cost demand |
| 7 | Pigment / Color Masterbatch | 2 ~ 8 | Adjust product color and covering power, add as required |
| 8 | Other Additives (UV Resistant Agent / Mildew Proof Agent) | 0.5 ~ 2 | Applied for outdoor and humid environment products, unnecessary for indoor common leather |

Key Parameters & Adjustment Suggestions
DOP Dosage Control
- Regular hand feel for sofa leather: 55-65 phr DOP, offering moderate softness and excellent folding resistance.
- Ultra-soft luggage leather: Dosage can rise up to 70 phr, while anti-migration property needs to be noticed.
- Stiffer office chair leather: Reduce DOP to 50 phr, and add a small amount of DOA to improve cold resistance.
Process Adaptation (Calendering / Coating)
- Calendered leather: Ensure good formula fluidity, keep balanced ratio of lubricant and DOP to avoid roller sticking.
- Coated leather (wet & dry process): Properly lower DOP content, match with special paste resin and foaming agent for foamed leather production.
Practical Reminders
- For low migration and eco-friendly requirements, replace part of DOP with DOTP or epoxidized soybean oil to reduce precipitation risk.
- Select stabilizers suitable for processing temperature. The common roller temperature of calender machine is 160-190℃, inferior stabilizers will cause yellowing and material decomposition.
- Excessive filler will damage hand feel and folding resistance. It is recommended that filler content for sofa leather shall not exceed 30 phr.
